Initial painting of footballer at Waverley Park

Although my topic of interest is more regularly in line with cultural themes that describe a place or a specific art feature, this week was a bit different for me. Last week, I visited The Last Piece, a cafe in Wheelers Hill that overlooks the Hawthorn football club’s training ground.

Although I wouldn’t say that I am an avid football fan, I felt quite lucky to get a chance to watch a top AFL team training while I was there.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about incorporating people—or even just hints of them—into my scenes to add a new dynamic to my paintings. So, while I was there, I captured a few shots of the players during training. It turned out to be the perfect opportunity to practice painting movement and human figures.
This quick painting shows one of the players as he entered the field. I feel quite happy with the result in that there appears to be a certain amount of movement in the image and for me, it is a good starting point before I actually begin incorporating people figures into my scenes.
