A Review Of The
Curator’s Talk at the NGV
On Tuesday 11th December 2024, the NGV presented an interesting talk held by the curators and established art researchers of the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne. The talk was undertaken to promote the ongoing Art Journal, created and distributed by the NGV.
In these presentations, the audience heard some rather comical and telling stories of the behind-the-scenes struggles and tribulations of various artists that had been presented at the NGV. We also heard of how these artists and their works were received by the public and the critical acclamation (or bashing) they evoked.
The talks were detailed and accompanied by a slide presentation, in this way we were able to get a further insight into the artworks displayed at this prestigious art gallery in Victoria.
Led by established members of the NGV
The presenters included Megan Patty, Ted Gott, Beckett Rozentals, Raye Collins, and Maria Quirk.
These insights gave us so much more information that you would get simply through the act of browsing through the art gallery. We listened to anecdotes from these experts that gave us in-depth back stories to certain exhibits presented by the NGV in past, present and future displays.
One particular notion that became evident while listening to these presenters was the enthusiasm that they, themselves experienced while digging deeper into the background stories of the art and artists and they were exploring for their research that was to be the essence of their piece in the upcoming Art Journal.
This is what makes the Art Journal an invaluable publication. In understanding more about the background of how a piece of art came to be, you become even further invested in the appreciation for the artwork. The art also takes on an additional dimension in that you can engage yourself in the artwork by partaking in the depths of knowledge when you are experiencing that art.
Through the historical Art Journal (called by many names of the years) and the stories within it, the general public has a publication available to them, that has been (and will continue to be) a commemoration of the variety of displays of artwork presented at the National Gallery of Victoria.
As you might expect, the older publications were not created in digital format however, they have been made available as downloadable PDFs where the original pages are presented as images. In the more recent years, the Art Journal has been made available in both digital and print. These too are available to view and read online at the link above.
For those wishing to explore these journals further, they are freely available for the public to view online at:
